This may seem early, and you may wonder what problems your child could possibly have when they’re only a year old. The fact is that we don’t want to wait until your child develops a problem. Seeing them when their teeth first begin to emerge allows us to detect any potential issues and take the steps to prevent them from harming your child’s future oral health.

Your Child's First Visit with Our Dentist

We understand that the first visit can be a little overwhelming – especially for mom and dad! You’ll be happy to know that we completely understand your feelings and welcome you to stay with your child during the visit.

There are two primary goals for your child’s first few dental visits. One is to spend time with you and your child to establish a comfortable relationship that allows us to get to know each other. The second is to educate you about the steps you can take to promote your child’s oral health. We will talk about a healthy diet, proper home dental care, and the importance of continuing preventive care.

The Dental Exam and Recommendations

First, we will review your medical history and our hygienist will perform a caries risk assessment, Then our doctor will gently examine your child’s teeth, identify problems, and review the findings with you. In some cases, we may recommend digital x-rays or intraoral photos to get a clear picture of what’s going on in your child’s mouth.

After the exam, we will explain our treatment recommendations and answer any questions you may have. We often use a technique called “tell-show-do” where we show and explain to your child how we clean their teeth. If they are ready, we will polish their teeth and apply a topical fluoride varnish.
